Cuauhtémoc Against the Myth, by David Alfaro Siqueiros

David Alfaro Siqueiros, Cuauhtémoc Against the Myth, 1944, piroxylin paint and other 3-D effects, Tecpan Museum

The warm, vibrant hues and distorted forms of the mural evoke a sense of violent passion. This highly political image is tension-filled, portraying an epic battle between two mythological characters. On the right is the Aztec emperor Cuautemoc who is piercing the heart of the centaur on the left. The centaur, who wields a cross-shaped dagger, represents imperialism and Christianity. In the background, Moctezuma shows his surrender through an open gesture; the revolutionaries are victorious.
